Leap too Far

Gordon Cooper with Bruce Henderson. Leap of Faith: an Astronaut's Journey into the Unknown. HarperCollins, 2000.

Mercury and Gemini astronaut Gordon Cooper's day of fame was nearer to 40 than 30 years ago, which is perhaps why his memoirs are spiced up with UFO stories.
Among his adventures are a run with a beautiful woman who claims to be channelling an extradimensional intelligence. It comes as no surprise to learn she is part of the cult surrounding Andrija Puharich. This leads to him being offered a ride on a flying saucer by none other than the veteran contactee Dan Fry. Cooper seems impressed by Fry's degree from St. Andrew's College, London, awarded for his 'thesis' Steps to the Stars. Alas he might have been less impressed had he really that St. Andrew's College was a diploma-mill operating out of a disused Wesleyan Chapel, and its principle was a 'wandering bishop' whose main line of business was defrauding West African students, and that the 'thesis' was a nutty contactee book. Needless to say the ride never took place, and the beautiful contactee disappeared out of Gordon's life.
